Disability Access Project

Most programs that address the needs of abused women lack the capacity to meet the full range of needs of women with disabilities who are victims of abuse. The Access and Education Program of Springtide Resources (formerly Education Wife Assault) has tried to address this lack with training and educational workshops on disability issues. WomanACT has done some preliminary work on disability issues with member agencies and identified a need for policy guidelines about working with disabled women. The Disability Access Project is a joint initiative that will build on the combined experience, expertise and connections of both organizations.

Goal

The goal of the project is to improve the ability of WomanACT member agencies and other community organizations to increase their ability to serve women with a wide range of disabilities by developing policy guidelines, materials and resources to assist these agencies.

Objectives

The objectives of the project include:

  • Conduct an environmental scan and survey member agencies of WACT regarding the needs of disabled women.
  • Create policy guidelines and documents regarding disability issues
  • Offer information-sharing workshops, consulting opportunities and policy guidelines to WACT member agencies and the WACT council.
